Private Aviation 101: Why Buying a Private Jet is Not Cost Efficient

You’re looking to charter a private jet and there are too many options online? Some use the word operator and others speak about providing a fleet of thousands of different aircraft? Yes, welcome to the private aviation market. Well, there are two types of providers in the market, operators and brokers, and both have different traits to offer passengers, with flexibility and reliability topping the list.

Operators on one side have their own fleet, which is fixed in the amount and type of aircraft, and charter brokers, on the other side, although don’t own an established fleet, have the capability to source from thousands of aircraft in order to adapt to the client’s needs. They do it by having a sound relationship with various operators in diverse continents, always delivering a suitable solution for each client. Even when operators don’t have their aircraft available, they rely on a broker to provide their service.

As BitLux CEO Kyle Patel simply puts it, “brokers handle the heavy lifting, allowing you to sit back and relax while they put in the time to arrange the details. For flights this includes but is not limited to finding the right jet to accommodate your needs and wants, negotiating prices, choosing the right Fixed Base Operator, planning other aspects of the trip, such as luggage handling, amenities, concierge, within others, and protecting your best interests at every step.”

Although at the end of the day the operator will oversee the flight, it may very well be the case that the broker arranged the flight almost entirely for its client, therefore granting full flexibility and finding options that adapt to his or her needs. Operators, with a fixed number of aircraft, won’t always have the availability to deliver a service on a certain day or time, because their fleet might be in use or in maintenance.

So, reliability should be a concern especially for urgent last-minute flights. Furthermore, from an operator’s standpoint, having the same planes at disposal might be a problem for some clients and especially for those routes that demand specific features from either turboprops or jets. Brokers, again, can give a helping hand to meet these demands.

Is buying a jet an option?

Private aviation is not what it used to be. Being a member of an exclusive group of jet owners was special 20 years ago, but today, in the sharing economy, owning is not the cost-efficient decision. Apart from buying the aircraft, there are far too many associated costs that come along. Scheduled maintenance, hangarage, insurance, crew salaries, just to name a few. When chartering a jet, all those costs are accounted for in the final price, what makes for a far more flexible experience.

In general, you need to at least fly 400 hours a year to make buying an aircraft a cost-efficient decision. That number of hours are generally met by large multinational companies, which transport their top executives on a weekly basis. But even so, the high costs are making companies shift to the on-demand charter, seeking the advantages of their own private aircraft, without the costs.
